Legislative Goals
Value of Government Relations
at the Ashland Area Chamber of Commerce
Mission: To work with our elected officials to establish regulations and policies that will positively impact the ability of our local businesses to both compete in the worldwide economy, and continue to generate income and job.
Every business, no matter how large or small, operates within a world of policy, regulations and laws. Most government officials desire to have a strong relationship with the people they serve. Therefore, businesses and the organizations that represent them have a duty to express their opinions and interests on matters affecting their local community (in our community, that organization is Your Chamber). Whether in Washington, DC, the state capitol or city hall, the opinions of constituents in the officials’ home district can be the most important influence on a legislator’s decision.
Purpose of the Chamber’s Government Relations Committee
The Government Relations Committee is committed to reviewing, developing and supporting issues and candidates that promote a positive, proactive business environment. We believe that candidates, laws and regulations should serve the public without acting as a detriment to business development and growth.
2008 - 2009 Goals and Objectives
Identify Legislative Priorities and Opportunities to Take Action
Develop a new questionnaire/survey to identify issues of concern to our stakeholders. We also plan to work with the Business Development Committee and city leaders to improve the business atmosphere in Ashland County.
Promote Chamber’s Government Relations efforts
The committee plans to share successes with our stakeholders through regular legislative e-mail updates and other Chamber publications. We also plan to share successes with the public through regular news releases and guest columns in local and regional publications.
Provide Leadership in Revitalization of Ashland County Schools
Your Chamber has been working with school and city leaders to identify major areas of concern for business.
Research Funding Sources for Advocacy Efforts
The Legislative Issues Committee will look at ways to set up more financial support for our educational/advocacy programs. We will also identify sponsorship opportunities for government relations programs, including: legislative e-mail updates; a marketing piece for our advocacy efforts.
